Together with lens manufacturer Viltrox, Rollei presents its first lens for Canon RF systems. The 85mm Viltrox lens with f/1.8 is tested for sharpness, vignette, bokeh, and autofocus on the Canon EOS R5 camera by photographer Stephan Wiesner. Wiesner was absolutely thrilled with the portraits that resulted from the combination of his Canon camera and the Viltrox lens. Thanks to the good image quality of the lens, the photographer was able to work directly in JPG format with his workshop pictures, without having to heavily edit the photos after compression. The review including test charts can be found here in the video:
Autofocus, sharpness and bokeh - what does the professional say?
The Viltrox lens takes absolutely sharp photos with a beautiful bokeh effect at an aperture of 2.0. The photographer deliberately opted for only a slight blur, as the background and the workshop were also intended to be recognizable. An exposure time of 1/125 second and an ISO value of 200 then resulted in wonderful photos with mixed light, which can be viewed without further editing.

Furthermore, Wiesner took a portrait of Jan, an employee in the bicycle workshop, in daylight. The portrait was taken in RAW format with camera settings of f/2.2, ISO 250, and an exposure time of 1/125 second. The image was edited afterwards, as the Canon camera's default setting tends to make skin appear too red. However, there is a remedy for this, and Wiesner offers the following practical tip: always use the neutral mode instead of the pre-set portrait mode if you want to continue working in JPG format.

In the studio, the professional photographer prefers a smaller aperture, as in portrait photography the person's face is in focus. He explains this by stating that the face is not a flat plane but has different depths. Thus, with a small aperture, it can easily happen that individual parts appear out of focus as soon as the model does not look completely straight into the camera. That is why he works in the studio with an aperture of f/3.2, with a shutter speed of 1/160 second and an ISO of 200. Both the white balance and contrast of the Viltrox lens and the Canon R5 were convincing.

Optical properties of the camera lenses
Stephan Wiesner's conclusion – a successful, alternative Canon lens that proves to be a worthy opponent to the original!
He goes on to say: "Whether the Viltrox lenses are suitable for your needs or if a macro and image stabilizer function of the original Canon lens is more valuable to you, you have to decide for yourself. The Viltrox is definitely a worthy alternative to the Canon lens."
